Best advice for quitting smoking
I see people, who set quit date. They wait for that moment in fear, and do nothing but struggle during their quitting period. Others pimp up their quitting with nicotine patches or antidepressants. Congrats on determination, but those people came to a knife fight with bare hands.
If I had to give one and only advice, my best advice for quitting smoking would be treat it as a job. Treat quitting smoking cigarettes as any other activity you do in your life for money. This time, instead of getting payed, you’ll be granted a higher quality, longer life. I don’t know about you, but for me is way more motivating than cash. If you feel the same way, treat quitting smoking cigarettes even more serious than activity you are paid for in your professional life.
By saying treat quitting smoking cigarettes as a job, I mean the following:
Take it seriously
You can’t expect to keep your job, if you show up whenever you want, not when you have to, you do what you want, not what is expected from you, and you always in a bad mood. Nobody likes workers like this. Nobody needs them
Take your quitting smoking cigarettes seriously. Don’t accuse someone else or social surroundings for your failures. Don’t look for excuses. Just take it seriously as a grown up, come up with a plan and start quitting.
You don’t have right to treat others like crap just because you are quitting. This is not a problem of others, this is your issue, deal with it and be nice to others.
You made your decision, you know your reasons quit smoking cigarettes, now it’s time to make it happen. Each and
every day you have to work for it. Don’t do it whenever you want. You can’t be a determined quitter Mondays thru Thursdays, and take off on weekends. It does not work that way. This is 24/7 job. You should read your contract more careful before accepting the position of smoking quitter.
Execute what you have to
Workers, who are doing what they like, but not what they have to, usually simulate working process. They hang around in the same position were hired at best, but usually they are sacked first opportunity possible
You will not achieve anything in quitting smoking if you simulate quitting process. If you start to do discounts for yourself, be sure you are one step closer to getting back in your cosy world of smoke. You have your quitting plan- stick to it. Period.
Do your best on every task
Do your best and a little bit extra on every quit smoking activity you have. Sooner than later you will be rewarded with no cigarettes smoked, and less cravings hit. Make extra 5 morning breaths in your routine. Read article from the start, if you caught your mind wondering, and you lost in the text. Write two more comments on the quit smoking groups you are in. If you feel you should do something in order to kill craving that you don’t have on your list- do it! Going that extra mile separates winners from losers.
Find some colleagues
Write comments on quit smoking blogs, like this one, register to quit smoking groups on social media, maybe you can make a small quitters group in your neighbourhood. You can share your achievements and failures, post some thoughts on a subject and receive a feedback. It is always easier to achieve in a group then solo.
Work with people you want to learn from
Find YouTube channels, that inspires you. Stay in quit smoking support groups only if you get support and encouragement there. Read articles, that boosts your self esteem and energy. You do not want negativity around you. Your mind might and will play nasty games with you, so you don’t want any extra emotional weight from outside. Just positive emotions, and people you admire.
It leads to another feature of quitters life- social surroundings. Try to avoid people that irritates you for first couple months of your quitting journey, and meet people that you like, that loads you with energy.
Organise in advance
There is time to plan and time to perform. To achieve a max productivity you do not have to mix those two in one bowl. Plan your quitting smoking cigarettes activities in advance, so you can start doing it right away without thinking, then time comes. It is too late to think HOW to kill your craving, when it hits. It is time to kill the craving with a list of measures, you prepared in advance. That would be my second best advice for quitting smoking.
Don’t leave, before you leave
People who do not care about their jobs, who are starting to fantasise about next weekend on Monday mornings, newer reach another step on their careers. The same is with quitting smoking. You have to be fully in your quitting activities, you must be determined to reach your goal in order to succeed. The worst thing you can do to yourself is to be in an exit mode, when you still following your quitting plan, but you feel you are not in to it. Your days are numbered.
Set specific time for activities
Consistency is key. You have do your quit smoking activities at a specific time, so you develop a new habit. You used
to smoke a morning cig with a coffee, driving to work cig, and an office break smoke- you had your smoking rituals at a certain time of a day, and it became a habit.
Now you have to devote certain moments of your day for quit smoking activities. Start your day with glass of water with a lemon and breathing exercises, listen to a healthy lifestyle podcast driving to work, read some posts on quitting smoking on your phone after lunch, etc. After you make your new anti smoking activities a habit, they push out your old smoking rituals.
Enjoy reward for accomplishing milestone
Make yourself a reward system. It’s like a salary, that depends on your performance. Decreased your smokes by half for a week- extra 3 parts of your favorite TV show, or SPA procedures. Did not smoke for last 36 hours? A day trip to an amusement park with your family. You earned this, be sure to use your rewards.
Make you reward list in advance, so you know what you are fighting for. It can be food or activities, you name it. It is important you can get those ONLY you hit your milestone. Don’t try to make your rewards extra healthy or usefull. Most important, they has to be pleasant for you. You are quitting smoking cigarettes at this moment, not carving whole new version of yourself. Small step at a time.
There are plenty advices and advisors in the internet. I do not say they are wrong, but if you ask me what is the best advice for quitting smoking, I would definatelly shoot this one out- treat your quitting process as a job, that contains daily tasks, necessity to evolve in the subject, and patience waiting the desired result.
Treat your quitting smoking cigarettes seriously as a day job, and you increase your chances for success dramatically. Make your quitting a commitment for yourself. Commit to work on your quitting. Finish your smoking quitting tasks on time and put enough effort into it. Result might come not as fast as you wish, but it will certainly come, because you have to give first, and receive later. Just like in your career whatever it is.
