Quit smoking cold turkey
You wake up that very morning, stretch your body up. Just starting morning routine you remember- I’m quitting cold turkey today. There is no place for morning coffee and cigarette anymore in your life. You are determined and you live through the first cig moment. Almost with no pain. You proud of yourself. Why couldn’t you quit earlier. It’s not that hard. You live thru the moment you usually have your second daily smoke with a light nostalgia. By the time third cig should be puffed you are irritated a bit. Hours pass by, craving goes up, and at the end of your very first clean day, you sign up to the Facebook quit smoking support group. You write a post, requesting for a support, you get like 25 supporting posts in an hour. Time to sleep. 3 am in the morning you light up as this is the only thing that may help you to sleep. You feel pleasurable relief and disappointed of yourself at the same time. You were clean for 30 hours.
While quitting this way you understand clearly you are going to live nicotine free for the rest of your live. The only shady promise you’ve been given is that lust for smoking is going to decrease when time goes by. How long should you wait? How fast the lust will decrease? Nobody tells that. It’s personal, you know. Your head is racing restless all that cig free day. FInally, you agree with yourself it is less harm to be a moderate smoker, than live with those thoughts for god knows how long.
Don’t take this short story word by word. Going cold turkey may last 30 days, not 30 hours, but mostly the end is the same. Shameless ball of smoke, leaded by relief and guilt.
Quit smoking cold turkey failure
If you can quit smoking next morning after smoking half a pack a day for several years, congratulations- there was no addiction involved. Despite intensity and period of poisoning yourself you are very robust for addictions. 99% of us are not so lucky, so quitting smoking cold turkey is not that simple. I am a believer quitting smoking this way 19 times out of 20 finishes not as person expected. I would appreciate much if you write at the comments how long you were clean after going cold turkey. Maybe you know people who quit for good this way. I am really interested, as I do not know a single person like that.
Underestimation of cravings. Before quitting, your biggest cravings were for an hour or two during flight or public event. You could feed you lust at first chance possible. After you decided to quit, you know you can not feed your craving. Never again. It is OK for couple first waves of desire, but when you start feel discomfort all the time, the question emerges- is it really worth it? Let’s review the facts:
- You feel discomfort all the time
- You know the cure from your craving
- You gave yourself the word never again
- Nobody knows how long the torture will last.
You can live with the idea of never smoking again ONLY if you do not want to smoke anymore. Before that, go on and light it if you want.
Power of will come in to play as a main weapon here. It is a great one if used properly. The problem is that power of will is not used correctly while going cold turkey.
Will power is effective only for short term goals. For example if you decided to run double you usually run, power of will is a great assistant here. You know for how long approximately you need the assistance of it and you can switch it on. Willpower is like a boost system to perform.
You decided to quit once and for all. You switch on you willpower assistant with no time limitation. I have news for you. From this moment time is your enemy. It is only a matter of time than willpower comes to an end, and your doubts will win over the power of will.
Finally, we can not forget the physical side of quitting smoking cold turkey. After you stop smoking instantly, you may face some health issues due to abstinence. Headache, throat sore, insomnia, cough, you name it. There is a separate branch of formology to cut those pains out. You may suffer if for some time, but again, time is not your ally here.
More realistic goals than cold turkey
Nicotine free life is not only that period you struggle quitting. Is all the time left for you in this world. There is no reason to be in a rush. There is no sense to become a quieter ASAP. Try to become a non smoke for good instead. There are different stages of quitting smoking, And first three of them are definitely not a smoke free. So, where to start?
The only thing that matters now is your understanding that benefit of smoking pleasure is greater than damage of it. Think about while smoking every time and honestly answer this question. Did you enjoy it enough, to sacrifice a piece of your health? At the end of the day, while smoking the last one, make a sum of smokes that brought pleasure against cigarettes smoked totally. If you honest with yourself, you had some really pleasurable cigs that day and some you smoked just out of a habit. Give yourself a promise to avoid a habit cigs and to smoke only a pleasurable ones. Smoking should be nothing but a pleasure for you at this stage.
Happy life with fewer cigarettes smoked
After using the exercise I suggested for some weeks, make a conclusion. How many cigarettes you are smoking now compared to couple weeks ago. Deduct 2 days you smoked the least amount- you were determined a lot most probably and it shows nothing relevant. Also deduct 2 days you smoked the most. Friday Saturday binge drinking along with a smoke is irrelevant for you at this stage. Don’t feel guilt also. We all are human beings, so it is OK to be imperfect. Concentrate on average days. Hopefully you have smaller amount of cigs smoked per day you started. Now you have to repeat this exercise over and over again until you’ll be smoking 3-5 cigarettes per day. You doubt it’s possible? Believe, the less you smoke, the less pleasurable cigarettes you have. If amount of smokes remains the same as at the start of activity, think, why it happened. I would be more than interested to know, how the exercise went through for you. Please, write it at the comments.
